SBC Member RIDER ALERT Quick Notice

Phil's Big Birthday Ride July 16, 2026, Big La...

This week's Thursday ride will honor my birthday and any other members that have July birthdays. We'll leave from Big Lake Elementary School near the intersection of SR9 and West Big Lake Blvd. The school is just across from the Big Lake Fire Department. The route will go around Big Lake on W Big Lake Blvd for a warmup before the climb up Lake Cavanaugh Rd. From the intersection with SR9, Lake Cavanaugh Rd is an 11 mile climb up to the lake. The climb isn't steep but it is long. The steepest sections are about 7% with most of the rest 2% to 5%. There will be water and snacks for a rest stop at the top. Here's the route in RWGPS, Big Lake Elem to Lake Cavanaugh and back 30.4 miles 1890ft · Ride with GPS .

There are no rest rooms at the start or at the top. There is currently construction on SR9 just north of Big Lake. Instead, I recommend taking Little Mountain Rd from Blackburn Rd in Mount Vernon. This will bring you down to W Big Lake Blvd just a mile or so south of the school. This option has the advantage that, if necessary, you can stop at Little Mountain Park and use the restrooms. Lunch afterwards will be at the Big Lake Bar & Grill.
